German Bundesliga Results
The Bundesliga, which was established in 1963, has grown to become one of the most respected and well-known leagues in the world of football. The league’s origins can be traced back to the regional leagues that existed in West Germany prior to its formation. These regional leagues were divided into the north, south, southwest and west, with the top two teams in each region advancing to a second stage to determine the national champion. In the years leading up to the formation of the Bundesliga, football in Germany was primarily amateur or semi-professional. The decision to merge the Oberligen, the top tier of these regional leagues, was made with the goal of professionalizing the sport in Germany, as well as to prevent the country’s top players from leaving to play abroad. Additionally, the formation of the Bundesliga was intended to help revive the fortunes of the German national team following their early exit from the 1962 FIFA World Cup. The decision to create the Bundesliga was made on July 28, 1962, when 103 of the 129 delegates of the German Football Association voted in favor of it. Osnabrück lawyer Hermann Gösmann was named the new president of the DFB and tasked with overseeing the creation of the league. Gösmann formed a six-member committee to make important decisions, with just one year before the Bundesliga would debut. When the Bundesliga was first established, it featured 16 teams, with five teams joining from the Oberliga West, five from the Oberliga South, three from the Oberliga North, two from the Oberliga Southwest, and one from the regional league in Berlin. The founding member teams were: 1860 Munich, Cologne, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Braunschweig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hertha Berlin, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe, Preußen Munster, MSV Duisburg, Nuremberg, Saarbrücken, Schalke, VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen. The teams that were champions of their respective leagues the previous season were guaranteed a spot in the Bundesliga, regardless of their position in the league standings. Additionally, there was a rule in place that only one club per city could be included in the Bundesliga. This rule meant that Bayern Munich was not able to participate in the league’s inaugural season, as 1860 Munich had won the league in 1962/63. Although some teams were disappointed at not being included in the top tier, they were given the opportunity to earn promotion from the Regionalliga divisions that remained, which now fed into the new Bundesliga.
Bundesliga Table
The Bundesliga table is the official standings of the league, showing the position of each team based on their points and goal difference. The team that finishes at the top of the table is declared the champion of the league, while the bottom three teams are relegated to the second tier of German football, the 2. Bundesliga.
