Overhauling the Blues

M. Kovačić
Midfielder

Chelsea’s plan to overhaul their squad has gained momentum, with five deals nearing completion. Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz are set to join Premier League rivals as part of the clearout. The objective for Chelsea this summer is to raise funds, reduce their wage bill, and trim the squad size. They are on the verge of securing agreements totaling approximately £130m before June 30, which will be factored into the current year’s financial accounts. Previously, Chelsea spent around £600m on transfer fees during this period.

If Chelsea reaches an agreement with Manchester United for Mason Mount, the total expenditure could increase further. However, Chelsea turned down a £45m plus £5m in add-ons offer from Manchester United for the midfielder. Chelsea’s valuation for Mount stands at £65m. On a positive note, Chelsea did finalize a £65m deal with Arsenal for Kai Havertz, paving the way for his move to north London after personal terms were agreed upon.

Mateo Kovacic, on the other hand, has made similar progress with Manchester City and is expected to join Pep Guardiola’s side. A deal worth £30m, including an initial fee of £25m, has been agreed upon by both clubs. Additionally, Chelsea has been in discussions regarding several players joining the Saudi Pro League. Three deals are nearing completion, with these transfers following N’Golo Kante’s free transfer to Al-Ittihad in the Middle East.

Winger Hakim Ziyech, who joined Chelsea for just over £33m in 2020, has agreed to move to Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo’s club, for approximately £8m. Defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Napoli for £33m, is set to join Al-Hilal for a fee exceeding £15m. Edouard Mendy, a £22m signing from Rennes in 2020, is expected to join Al-Ahli, with a valuation of at least £10m.

Ziyech, Koulibaly, and Mendy were part of the package of players Chelsea was discussing with Saudi Pro League clubs. This package also included Romelu Lukaku, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Lukaku was priced at approximately £60m but is not interested in a move to Saudi Arabia, where he is also pursued by Al-Hilal.

Negotiations are ongoing regarding Aubameyang, while discussions regarding Hudson-Odoi’s future are set to take place in the coming days. Chelsea acknowledges that they will incur financial losses on all players departing the club. However, their primary focus is on clearing the decks, and the initial group of departures will assist them in achieving that goal.

The Red Devils re-bids for Mount

M. Mount
Midfielder

According to reports, Manchester United have raised their offer for Mason Mount, their primary midfield target, but an agreement has not been reached with Chelsea.

Erik ten Hag is keen on securing the services of the England international to strengthen his midfield this summer, but the two clubs have yet to agree on the player’s value.

The Athletic states that United has put forward a new proposal of £45 million plus £5 million in add-ons. This offer is said to have prompted a counteroffer from Chelsea, who now seek £60 million with an additional £5 million in add-ons.

Earlier this month, United’s initial offer of £40 million for the 24-year-old, whose Chelsea contract runs until the summer of 2024, was swiftly rejected.

For Mount, this summer feels like the conclusion of an era at Chelsea. He joined the club’s academy in 2015 and worked his way up through the ranks to become a key figure in the first team. In his 195 appearances across all competitions, he has contributed 33 goals and 37 assists.

During his time at Chelsea, Mount helped the team win the 2021 Champions League, scoring crucial goals against Porto and Real Madrid in the quarter-finals and providing the assist for Kai Havertz’s winning goal against Manchester City in the final.

However, this season has been plagued by injuries for Mount. He initially suffered an ankle injury in February and later underwent surgery in April for an abdominal issue.

In February, it was reported by Mail Sport that Chelsea attempted to offer Mount a new contract, but negotiations between the parties broke down.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane is still hopeful that Manchester United will revive their interest in signing him this summer if Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy, lowers his £100 million asking price.

Kane, the England captain, recently played at Old Trafford and scored two goals in a convincing 7-0 victory over North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifying. However, the chances of him making a permanent move to Manchester United depend on Levy, known for his tough negotiating tactics, softening his stance.

United has made it clear that they will not pursue a deal for £100 million as Kane will turn 30 next month and has only one year remaining on his Spurs contract. The club has currently ended its pursuit of Kane and shifted its focus to more attainable targets, such as Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund.

If the price is closer to £80 million, United might be tempted to resume negotiations, as manager Erik ten Hag prefers signing a striker with a proven track record in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s tribute to Kante

N. Kanté
Midfielder

After N’Golo Kante completed his move to Al-Ittihad, Chelsea paid a heartfelt tribute to the midfielder.

On Tuesday evening, Kante’s transfer to Saudi Arabia was confirmed, marking the end of his seven-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.

Throughout his time at the club, Kante achieved success by winning the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and FA Cup. In their farewell statement, Chelsea honored him as a ‘club legend.’ Co-directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley also expressed their thoughts on behalf of the club, acknowledging Kante’s significant impact and influence during his tenure. They highlighted his tireless performances in midfield, which contributed to multiple trophy victories and solidified his place in the club’s history. The club extended their well wishes as Kante embarks on the next phase of his career.

Kante joined Chelsea in 2016 following his instrumental role in Leicester City’s remarkable title triumph the previous season. In his debut year with Chelsea, Kante once again won the league under the management of Antonio Conte. He continued to add to his trophy collection by securing the FA Cup and Europa League in the subsequent seasons, all while winning the World Cup with the French national team.

Among Chelsea fans, Kante will be most fondly remembered for his performances during the team’s journey to Champions League glory in 2021. He stood out as the team’s standout player in the quarter-finals against Atletico Madrid, the semi-final victory over Real Madrid, and the final against Manchester City. His display in the final, where Chelsea secured a surprising 1-0 victory, is widely regarded as one of the finest performances in recent memory, with Kante thwarting City’s attempts to breach their defense.

Unfortunately, Kante’s final season at Chelsea was marred by injuries, restricting him to just seven Premier League appearances. As his contract was set to expire at the end of the season, Kante initially appeared likely to extend his deal with Chelsea. However, he ultimately chose to make the switch from West London to the Middle East.

In the coming weeks, Kante will join his Al-Ittihad teammates as they aim to defend the title they won last season under the guidance of former Wolves and Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo. They secured the top spot, finishing five points ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

Nations League Recap

A 120-Minute Deadlock

The UEFA Nations League final was determined through penalty kicks after an intense match. Croatia secured a spot in the final by defeating the host country, the Netherlands, in extra time. Spain also advanced to the final with a late goal from Joselu against Italy, resulting in a 2-1 victory. The final showdown between the two teams was evenly matched, and despite Croatia’s reputation for success in penalty shootouts, Spain emerged as the victors with a 5-4 win. This victory crowned Spain as the champions of the UEFA Nations League, marking a remarkable campaign for La Furia Roja. Let’s review the final match and the 2022-23 Nations League.

Match Review

Before the match, Spain was favored with even-money odds. The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock. Although there were several chances, Spain’s Gavi had the first notable opportunity but missed the target. Croatia later found success with long balls, which put pressure on Spain’s defenders, resulting in some last-ditch tackles. Unai Simon, Spain’s goalkeeper, made an impressive save on a header from Ivan Perisic in the 31st minute.

Both teams had their chances in the second half, but Spain had clearer opportunities. Fabian Ruiz missed an open net, Ivan Perisic cleared a shot from Ansu Fati off the goal line, and Marco Asensio failed to convert his chance in the 90th minute. The match entered extra time, where both teams played cautiously, leading to a penalty shootout.

Croatia had a reputation for excelling in penalty shootouts, having won their four previous encounters, while Spain had experienced a penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, Spain remained composed as their penalty takers successfully converted their first four shots. Unai Simon saved Lovro Majer’s weak effort, and Aymeric Laporte had the chance to secure the victory for Spain. Unfortunately, Laporte’s shot hit the crossbar, giving Croatia a lifeline. Nevertheless, Bruno Petkovic’s penalty was saved by Simon, and Dani Carvajal sealed Spain’s UEFA Nations League championship with a penalty, resulting in a 5-4 shootout triumph. This victory marked the first major honor for head coach Luis de la Fuente with La Furia Roja.

Spain’s journey to the final in the UEFA Nations League began last June in a challenging group. They faced Portugal, Czech Republic, and Switzerland in a double round-robin format. Spain started slowly with draws against Portugal and Czech Republic. On the third matchday, they secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Switzerland with Pablo Sarabia scoring the only goal. Spain continued their winning streak with a 2-0 triumph over Czech Republic in the reverse fixture. They suffered a 2-1 defeat against Switzerland on Matchday 5 but bounced back with a crucial 1-0 win against Portugal on the final day, thanks to Alvaro Morata’s late winner. Spain topped the group and advanced to the UEFA Nations League finals.

In the semifinal against Italy, Spain engaged in a hard-fought match. Both teams scored early goals in the first half, but Joselu, who substituted for Morata, scored an 88th-minute winner, sending Spain to the final.

Rodri eyes the Ballon d’Or

Another noteworthy storyline is the success of midfielder Rodri, who has now won four trophies in just three weeks. His outstanding performances have put him in the conversation for the Ballon d’Or, and he scored the winning goal in the Champions League final.

Hard luck for Modric?

L. Modrić
Midfielder

On the other hand, Croatia, led by Luka Modric, continues to strive for a major international trophy. Under the management of Zlatko Dalic, Croatia came close to winning on a few occasions, finishing as runners-up in the 2018 World Cup and claiming third place in Qatar 2022. However, their defeat in the UEFA Nations League final added to their heartbreak. The future remains uncertain for Modric, Croatia’s greatest-ever player, regarding his international retirement.

Italy secured the bronze medal in the Nations League for the second consecutive time by defeating the Netherlands in the third-place game. Italy held a 2-0 lead for most of the match, but three goals were scored in the final 25 minutes. Steven Bergwijn narrowed the score to 2-1, but Federico Chiesa responded just four minutes later, putting the Azzurri ahead 3-1. Georginio Wijnaldum scored a late consolation goal for the Netherlands, but it was not enough.

Conference League Preview

The European campaign has been a welcome distraction from Premier League woes for much of the season for David Moyes and his players, but it now presents West Ham with a huge opportunity to win their first major trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 1980. It is the first European final in 47 years. It will be the Hammers’ 15th European game of the campaign, a run spanning almost ten months, and a win will earn them not the trophy but a spot in the Europa League next season.

Fiorentina concluded the Serie A season in eighth, meaning they too depend on victory here to secure European football when the new season comes around. The Italian side has seen off the likes of Braga and Lech Poznan to reach the final.

Tonight will definitely be a treat as Fiorentina faces West Ham in the Europa Conference League final. It might be Europe’s third competition but don’t tell the fans of either club that. Both team fans will be desperate to lift that trophy on Wednesday, heralding an outstanding achievement for their club.

Can David Moyes’ West Ham beat Fiorentina, or will the Italians upset the Hammers?

Without a shred of doubt, both clubs have had difficult tourneys to reach this point and the chance to break long trophyless spells are only some of the narratives at play, with a number of big names potentially moving on from each team, with Declan Rice potentially bidding goodbye to the Hammers this summer.

A Discovery

Sofyan Amrabat, 26, burst into global consciousness in the winter as he was instrumental in Morocco reaching the World Cup semifinals. Morocco beat all expectations with outstanding performances across the team, but Amrabat stole the show. He acted as his team’s shield in midfield, anchoring his side as well as protecting the backline against a series of bigger and better teams. Amongst the best aspects of Amrabat’s game in Qatar was his ability to do dirty work in midfield. That led to him getting stuck in, making last-ditch tackles, disrupting play and restoring stability in his team’s gameplay. That style is the reason I’m backing Amrabat to find his name in the referee’s book here.

In 29 Serie A games – five of which were from the bench – he’s been booked 11 times. He is never afraid of getting booked and this has led him to get some silly bookings. He was calm and assured in Qatar but the pressure on Wednesday, in an intimate stadium, in front of a small group of dedicated fans, will be somewhat special.

He’s going to be operating in a midfield role which will see him having to deal with the players who will be making runs off Michail Antonio, which could force him into making some risky challenges.

European Finals’ Bookings

Referee Carlos del Cerro has given out 112 cards in 27 games in all competitions this season (101 yellow and 11 red).

We recall last week’s Europa League final showed us that these tense, cagey finals can get dirty, with that game seeing 14 yellow cards to players and staff.

All three of the European finals this year have an Italian finalist and we’ve already seen Roma lose, with Inter facing Man City on Saturday, and unfortunately for fans of the Hammers, it may yet be West Ham lifting this trophy on Wednesday.

The Power of the Hammer

The two main reason about David Moyes’ team winning.

Primarily, and this is perhaps crucial, they’ve garnered the required experience. They went deep into European competition last year and fell at the last hurdle to Frankfurt in the Europa League semifinals. The players looked distraught after that loss but this season they’ve come back stronger.

It can’t be undermined how beneficial that experience would have been for this team. History has shown that Premier League teams treat this campaign with little respect, but not West Ham, who have made it clear that they want to win it and have fielded good teams in every game.

Date, kick-off time, and venue

The Europa Conference League final is scheduled for 8 pm BST kick-off tonight, Wednesday, June 7, 2023. The venue is the Eden Arena in Prague, Czech Republic.

Transfer Rumors of the Week

– Declan Rice is rumored to be Bayern and Arsenal

The Gunners are in a heated battle to sign Declan Rice from West Ham this Summer, but Manchester and Bayern are also in the race. The race to sign West Ham captain is on the rise as the England international nears the final game with the Hammers. The captain is set to lead his team out in the Europa Conference League final in the coming week as they challenge Fiorentina to the trophy. According to media outlets, Bayern held a meeting with Rice about the possibility of a switch, and the outcome for them is said to be positive. While that may sound true, the overall position following it is still a boost to Arsenal at the moment. It remains to be seen how this all plays out but the north London outfit will have to sit tight for now, awaiting the European finals to play out first.

Benzema is Going To Saudi

The Saudi government has decided to inject $20 BILLION to develop the top Saudi clubs and thus give credibility to their league. They want to sign lots of “big names”.  With Ronaldo is earning £173million-a-year with Al Nassr while players such as Lionel Messi and other football icons have been approached. Benzema reportedly became the latest footballer to be offered huge sums of money to make the move to the Saudi Pro League. Although the Frenchman has just one year left on his contract with Real Madrid, questions have been raised about his future at the Bernabeu. Reports stated that Benzema had his head turned by an eye-watering offer from Saudi Pro League champions Al Ittihad. He had reportedly informed Carlo Ancelotti that he wanted to leave Real to join up with the Saudi side, although a fee between the two clubs hadn’t been agreed.

Harry Kane remains Real Madrid’s target to replace Karim Benzema and the Tottenham striker is willing to make the move. Although Man United is also bidding for the Spurs striker, Daniel Levy, Spurs chairman will be willing to sell only to a club outside the Premier League which gives Real Madrid an upper hand in negotiations to bid below the asking price for the sale of the England national which was set at £100m. Kane, 29, has a year left on his deal at Spurs, this could be their chance to cash in on the striker.

Where goes Messi?

Lionel Messi is expected to decide on his future over the coming hours – at most, days. Currently, he has two lucrative offers on the table: One from Saudi Arabia, and one from Miami. Over the past couple of days, the idea of going to Miami has become a reality for the player as this guarantees his family’s safety and comfort. However, the middle east, is a much more lucrative one, offering him more money: Messi is expected to take on a role within something of a State project that has been set up by the government with him and Cristiano Ronaldo has the poster boys.

Ugarte is going to Chelsea

Chelsea is set to sign Manuel Ugarte from Sporting CP with the mid-fielder having agreed to join the Premier League side on a transfer that could cost up to €65 million.

A Portuguese media outlet states that Ugarte has picked the Blues over interests from PSG who has offered the Uruguay international a better wage package than the London side. He is a player noted for his enormous defensive qualities, which is something that Chelsea has missed in their midfield throughout what has been a very difficult season.

There has been previous interest from England’s top flight, Liverpool but it is said the Old Lady pulled out of the deal fearful that the player’s €60m release clause was excessive.

The former Famalicao player’s desire to play in the Premier League is underlined by the fact that he turned down substantially higher wages at PSG to join Chelsea. Reports from Portugal stated that the French club offered him €5m per season to join whereas he will only be paid around €3.5m with Pochettino’s side.

Ugarte will play alongside fellow South American Enzo Fernandez at the heart of the Chelsea Midfield next season.

Mac Allister to Liverpool

Reports were on the rise last week that Mac Allister is close to reaching a personal agreement with the Reds over a summer move, as Premier League champions Manchester City refrained from making an offer despite reports of their interest.

The Brighton midfielder is set to be joining the Reds this summer and no other destinations have emerged, what’s yet to be known is “at what cost?” with Romano also stating earlier in the week that it will be ‘much less’ than €75m.

Whatever the cost is, Mac Allister could yet be the first signing of the summer for the Old Lady, but much more work has to be done after that to get Jürgen Klopp’s squad into shape.

Sevilla and AS Roma reached the UEFA Europa League final after ou and Bayer Leverkusen in the semifinal's second leg respectively.

Europa League Final Review

It was a night to reckon with for the Kings of the UEFA Europa League – Sevilla. By winning their seventh trophy and beating Mourinho’s Roma in penalties, the team from Seville has established itself as the undisputed champions in the history of the competition. The Rojiblancos kept their Europa League final record alive, as they made it seven trophies in seven appearances with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Giallorossi in Puskas Arena, Budapest on Wednesday.

This marks the fifth Europa League titles in 10 seasons for Sevilla. Sevilla Futbol Club are like no other team in terms of the Europa League. They made their way to the final fighting against clubs that had four times their budget, evicting Manchester United in the quarter-finals with aggregate of (5-2) and knocking-out Juventus with aggregate of 3-2 in the semi-finals. The 2022/23 season remains the worst season yet for Sevilla in 20 years, one in which they have had three managers and risked relegation.

Jose Luis Mendilibar took on the reins of managing the team in March, by then, Sevilla were two points off the relegation zone, after losing three of their last four matches and were ready to fall apart. Mendilibar was their last glimmer of hope, a man who had taken charge of more than 400 first-division games over a career that span as far back as 27 years but not at clubs such as this.

Both teams were equally matched and couldn’t be separated for 120 minutes of play, with the score line stuck at 1-1. Sevilla’s Moroccan shot-stopper, Bono, stood out in the penalties, he managed to save two important penalties consecutively from Mancini and Ibanez respectively, which helped Sevilla lift the Europa League trophy at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

A Tensed Game

The match was not without intensity. Both teams are known for their defensive styles, dirty play , and seldomly scoring a goal.

But from the start, both teams didn’t sit back but attacked vehemently with intent, creating chances to seize an early advantage in the game and this pulled through for Dybala at the 34th minute of the game. Sevilla fought back with intense build ups and attacks for the remaining part of the first half but to no avail. The second half started with Sevilla not losing its flare and intensity, and because of that at exactly 55th minute, they were recompensed with an equalizing own-goal from Mancini. Both teams were now back to square one, and remained so until the end of the match.

FOULS AND BOOKINGS

There were 13 bookings throughout the 120-minute span game, with 6 bookings levied on Sevilla and 7 booked on Roma.

Europa League Final Preview

Roma Manager Jose Mourinho has never lost a European Football final while Sevilla have won six European League finals in six appearances.

History has it that Sevilla remains the most successful team in regards to the European League bout and this may yet be an opportunity to lift the trophy a seventh time at the end of what has been a trying season.

With their third coach of the campaign, Jose Luis Mendilibar, after sacking Julen Lopetegui followed by its successor Jorge Sampaoli they narrowly escaped the torment of relegation and eliminated Manchester United and Juventus on their way to Budapest.

The Portuguese, Jose Mourinho, 60 has five major continental titles up his sleeve – two Champions League wins, two Europa League trophies with both Porto (2002/03) and United (2016/17) and last year’s victory in the inaugural Europa League Conference with the Italian side. Roma is sixth in the domestic campaign called Serie A, evicting the likes of Feyenoord and Bayer Leverkusen en route to the final.

Sevilla and AS Roma oust Juventus and Leverkusen to reach Europa League final

Sevilla and AS Roma reached the UEFA Europa League final after ousting Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen in the semifinal’s second leg.

Sevilla went to the UEFA Europa League final after beating Serie A giants Juventus 2-1 (3-2 on an aggregate) in a dramatic extra time at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Thursday in the second leg of the competition’s semifinal.

While Serie A sends one representative in the UEFA Europa League final following AS Roma’s win over Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen after the second leg between both sides ended in a goalless draw. Still, Il Lupi won 1-0 on aggregate due to the victory in the first leg.

Jose Mourinho is targeting a back-to-back victory with AS Roma after winning the UEFA Conference League trophy last season.

Sevilla vs Juventus

Both sides attacked each other, but all the goalkeepers displayed excellent saves in the first half.

Sevilla’s Bono and Juventus’ Wojciech Szczesny denied shots and headers from Federico Gatti and Lucas Ocampos, respectively. Szczesny also denied Marcos Acuna’s left-foot attempt. Juventus almost scored their first goal three minutes before the first half ended, but the referee considered Adrien Rabiot’s goal offside. The first half ended 0-0.

Biancoeri scored their first goal from Dusan Vlahovic in the 65th minute. But Sevilla equalized six minutes later from Suso’s outside-the-box shot. The match continued to the extra time after 90 minutes. The home team finally sealed the victory following Erik Lamela’s header from Bryan Gil’s crossing.

Sevilla played with ten men after Marcos Acuna was booked for the second time for wasting time before the throw-in. Juventus failed to equalize, and Los Palanganas succeeded in reaching the UEFA Europa League final.

If Sevilla win the final this season, the trophy will be their seventh. They have won six UEFA Europa League trophies so far, with the last win -was in 2019/2020, beating Inter Milan in the final.

Pragmatic football helps AS Roma to reach UEFA Europa League final

Bayer Leverkusen needed at least a two-goal win to get to the UEFA European League final following the loss in the first leg. Playing at BayArena, Xabi Alonso’s men pressed on the visiting side–managed by Alonso’s former boss at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho.

Kerem Dermibray threatened the guests in the 7th minute, but AS Roma’s goalie Rui Patricio quickly caught the ball. Bayer Leverkusen intensified their attack in the second half, while AS Roma boosted their defence by playing Georginio Wijnaldum, who substituted Andrea Belotti.

Giallorossi’s solid defence prevented the home team from scoring a single goal. Lorenzo Pellegrini and colleagues went to the final on a 1-0 aggregate. The UEFA Europa League final between AS Roma and Sevilla will take place at Puskas Arena, Budapest, Hungary, on May 31.

This season’s final is Mourinho’s sixth final in European competition. Despite his controversial remarks, the Portuguese manager is one of the world’s most decorated and respected managers in football history. Mourinho helped his country’s club FC Porto win the UEFA Europa League (formerly known as UEFA Cup) in 2002/2003 and UEFA Champions League in 2003/2004.

In 2009.2010, the former Chelsea boss led Inter Milan to clinch the UEFA Champions League title. Then, he moved to Real Madrid. Mourinho brought the UEFA Europa League with Manchester United in the 2016/2017 campaign. Then, he led AS Roma to win the UEFA Conference League–set up by the UEFA with aims to give more opportunities for European clubs to compete in the competition–title last season.

Mourinho will face one of the toughest tests as Sevilla have beaten Italian clubs many times (including today’s match against Juventus).
